Braving Kilimanjaro Summit for the Brave Heart Fund

In July 2011, a group of five brave and dedicated amateur climbers, fathers and their sons, reached Kilimanjaro’s Uhuru peak, after a hard and challenging five-day climb, with nights spent in subzero temperatures.

Their climb was dedicated to the Brave Heart Fund, raising awareness for Congenital Heart Disease (CHD), the number one killer in the first year of life and raising funds for needy children suffering from CHD in Lebanon.

At 5,895 meters, Kilimanjaro is Africa’s highest peak and ranks as the world’s fourth highest summit.

Five people made it to the top, while 12-year-old Mohammed Atallah, the youngest, successfully reached 4,000 meters, a tremendous achievement given his age.

The Brave Heart Fund is a charitable fundraising initiative established in 2003 at the American University of Beirut Medical Center (AUBMC).

It is operated by volunteers whose lives have been touched by Congenital Heart Disease (CHD) and provides financial assistance to needy families by helping them cover their child’s medical or surgical expenses.

The Brave Heart Fund’s mission is: to work towards the day when no child dies of heart disease because of a lack of funds.

To this end it aims to increase awareness about CHD, and to ensure the best possible care for children suffering from CHD.
