EDL Asks for Relocation to Avoid 'Occupation'

Electricite du Liban's board of directors urged the government on Friday to approve the transfer of the firm's belongings from its “occupied” headquarters in Beirut's Mar Mikhael area to another building.

The state-run company hoped that Energy Minister Arthur Nazarian would request the cabinet to approve the transfer of the documents and equipment from the main building to a new location so that EDL could function properly.

The company said in a statement that it made its request after all efforts aimed at “ending the abnormal situation at the company were depleted.”

It warned that the protest of EDL contract workers which started 47 days ago has had severe repercussions on the electricity sector.

Lebanon has been recently hit with severe power outages and increased rationing hours.

The workers, who have been asking for their full-time employment, have been blocking the company's, doors pending a settlement to their case.

The board of directors, which is functioning from the Zouk power plant north of Beirut, claims that a law, adopted by parliament in April, only allows 897 workers to become full-timers.
